==സെന്റ്. ജോസഫ് തീർത്ഥാടന പള്ളി, പെരിങ്ങഴ==
എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ മുവാറ്റുപുഴയ്ക്കടുത്ത്, പെരിങ്ങഴ എന്ന ഗ്രാമത്തില് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന പുരാതന നസ്രാണി ക്രൈസ്തവ ദൈവാലയങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് സെന്റ്. ജോസഫ് തീര്ത്ഥടന പള്ളി. പൗരസ്ത്യ കത്തോലിക്ക വിഭാഗത്തിലെ സീറോ മലബാര് സഭയുടെ കോതമംഗലം രൂപതയുടെ കീഴിലാണ് ഈ പള്ളി. വിശുദ്ധ യൗസേപ്പിന്റെ നാമധേയത്തിലാണ് പള്ളി സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. എ.ഡി 1864ല്‍ പെരിങ്ങഴ പള്ളി സ്ഥാപിതമായെന്ന് ചരിത്ര രേഖകള് സാക്ഷ്യപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. അന്ന് മുതൽ പെരിങ്ങഴ ‘തിരുക്കുടുംബപാലകന്റെ നാട്’ ആയി മാറി. 2021 മുതൽ കോതമംഗലം രൂപതയുടെ, വി. യൗസേപ്പിതാവിന്റെ നാമത്തിലുള്ള ഔദ്യോഗിക തീർത്ഥടനകേന്ദ്രം കൂടിയാണ് പെരിങ്ങഴ.
യൗസേപ്പിതാവിന്റെ പേരിലുള്ള കേരളത്തിലെ തന്നെ ഏറ്റവും പഴക്കമുള്ള ഇടവകകളിലൊന്നാണിത്. സിറോ മലബാര് സഭയുടെ ചരിത്രത്തിലൂടെ തിരിഞ്ഞുനോക്കുമ്പോള് വി. യൗസേപ്പിന്റെ നാമത്തില് സഭയില് സ്ഥാപിതമായ ആദ്യത്തെ അഞ്ച് പ്രധാന ദേവാലയങ്ങളിലൊന്ന് പെരിങ്ങഴയിലേതാണെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കാം. മാര്ത്തോമാ നസ്രാണികള്ക്ക് വേണ്ടി വികാരിയത്തുകള് സ്ഥാപിതമാകുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് തന്നെ രൂപീകൃതമായ ഇടവകയാണ് പെരിങ്ങഴ.
വിശുദ്ധ യൗസേപ്പിന്റെ നാമധേയത്തില് സ്ഥാപിതമായ കോതമംഗലം രൂപതയിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ ഇടവകയും പെരിങ്ങഴ തന്നെയാണ്. വി. യൗസേപ്പിതാവിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിലെ ഏഴ് വ്യാകുലങ്ങളെയും സന്തോഷങ്ങളെയും കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ചുള്ള ഇന്ത്യയിലെ തന്നെ ആദ്യത്തെ പിതാപാത അതിന്റെ പൂര്ണതയില് സ്ഥാപിതമായിരിക്കുന്നതും പെരിങ്ങഴയിലെ ഈ തീര്‍ത്ഥാടന ദൈവാലയത്തോട് ചേര്ന്നാണ്. നിരവധി സമീപ ഇടവകകളുടെ മാതൃ ഇടവക കൂടിയാണ് പെരിങ്ങഴ.
1870ൽ ഒമ്പതാം പീയൂസ് മാർപാപ്പ ആഗോള കത്തോലിക്കാ സഭയുടെ സംരക്ഷകനും മധ്യസ്ഥനുമായി മാർ യൗസേപ്പിനെ പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുന്നതിന് വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുന്നേ തന്നെ പെരിങ്ങഴ ഇടവക യൗസേപ്പിതാവിന്റെ നാമത്തിൽ സ്ഥാപിതമായി എന്നത് വിശുദ്ധനോടുള്ള ഇവിടുത്തുകാരുടെ വിശ്വാസത്തിന് സാക്ഷ്യം നൽകുന്നു.
==പെരിങ്ങഴയുടെ ചരിത്രം==
സഹസ്രാബ്ദങ്ങളുടെ ചരിത്രമുള്ള നാടാണ് പെരിങ്ങഴ എന്നതിൽ സംശയമില്ല. ഫലഭൂയിഷ്ഠമായ ഭൂമി, നദിയിലൂടെ ചെന്നെത്താവുന്ന പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ, വിശാലമായി കിടക്കുന്ന മലയിടുക്കുകൾ എന്നിവയെല്ലാം നിറഞ്ഞ പ്രദേശമാണ് പെരിങ്ങുഴ. ഇന്ന് പെരിങ്ങഴ എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന പ്രദേശം പണ്ട് തമിഴ് ഭാഷയിൽ പെരുംകുഴൈ എന്നാണ് വിളിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്. വലിയ പ്രദേശമെന്നാണ് അതിന്റെ അർത്ഥം. ജലസമ്പർക്കമുള്ള സ്ഥലമെന്ന് കുഴൈ എന്ന പദത്തിന് അർത്ഥമുണ്ട്. ബുദ്ധ-ജൈന മതങ്ങളുടെയും പിൽക്കാലത്ത് ബ്രാഹ്മണ അഥവാ വേദ മതത്തിന്റെയും സ്വാധീനമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന നാടാണ് പെരിങ്ങഴ.
പെരിങ്ങഴ പോലെ തന്നെ ചരിത്രമുറങ്ങുന്ന നാടാണ് ആരക്കുഴയും. പെരിങ്ങഴയിൽ പള്ളി സ്ഥാപിതമാകുന്നത് വരെയുള്ള ആരക്കുഴ, പെരിങ്ങുഴ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലുള്ളവരുടെ ചരിത്രം ഒന്ന് തന്നെയാണ്. ഈ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ വസിച്ചിരുന്നവരുടെ ആദ്യ കാലത്തെ പൊതു ഇടവക കിഴക്കിന്റെ മാതൃദൈവാലയം എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ‘മൈലക്കൊമ്പ്’ ആയിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ പെരിങ്ങഴയിൽ നിന്നുൾപ്പെടെ അവിടെ എത്തിച്ചേരുക എളുപ്പമല്ലായിരുന്നു. തുടർന്ന് എട്ടാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ ആരംഭത്തിൽ കടമറ്റം പള്ളി സ്ഥാപിച്ചപ്പോൾ ഈ പ്രദേശത്തെ വിശ്വാസികളിൽ കുറേഭാഗം ആ ഇടവകയായി തീർന്നു. എന്നാൽ അവിടെയും ചെന്നെത്തുക എളുപ്പമല്ലെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ പൂർവികർ എഡി 999 ആം വർഷത്തിൽ ആരക്കുഴയിൽ പള്ളി സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. പെരിങ്ങഴ 1864 വരെ ആരക്കുഴ ഇടവകയിൽപ്പെട്ട പ്രദേശമായിരുന്നു. പെരിങ്ങഴയുടെ ആദ്യകാല ചരിത്രം ആരക്കുഴയുടെ ചരിത്രം തന്നെയാണ്.
ആരക്കുഴ, പെരിങ്ങഴ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളുടെ കുടിയേറ്റം വലിയൊരു ചരിത്ര സംഭവമാണ്. സുഗന്ധ ദ്രവ്യങ്ങളുടെ ഉൽപ്പാദനത്തിനായിരുന്നു ആ കുടിയേറ്റങ്ങൾ. സുഗന്ധ ദ്രവ്യങ്ങളുടെ വ്യാപാരമായിരുന്നല്ലോ ആദിമകാല ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളുടെ പ്രധാന വരുമാന മാർഗം. കേരളത്തിലെ പൗരാണിക അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര വ്യാപാര കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളായിരുന്ന പാലയൂർ, കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂർ, പറവൂർ, കോക്കമംഗലം, നിരണം, കൊല്ലം ചായൽ എന്നിങ്ങനെയുള്ള കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിൽ വ്യാപാരം നടത്തുകയായിരുന്നു അവരുടെ പ്രധാന തൊഴിൽ. യഹൂദരും ബിബിലോണിയക്കാരും അലക്സാൻഡ്രിയക്കാരും ഫിനിഷ്യരും കേരളത്തിലെ സുഗന്ധദ്രവ്യങ്ങളും മുത്തും മയിൽപ്പീലിയും തേക്കും ഈട്ടിയുമെല്ലാം വാങ്ങിക്കുവാൻ പ്രസ്തുത വ്യാപാരകേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അന്നത്തെ വ്യാപാര ഭാഷ യേശുക്രിസ്തുവും ശിഷ്യന്മാരും സംസാരിച്ചിരുന്ന അരമായ ഭാഷ തന്നെയായിരുന്നു. കേരളീയർ തമിഴും പാലിയും ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നു.
ആരക്കുഴ, പെരുമ്പല്ലൂർ, പെരിങ്ങഴ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലെ പ്രധാന നാണ്യവിള കുരുമുളകായിരുന്നു. ഫലഭൂയിഷ്ടമായ ഭൂമിയുള്ളതുകൊണ്ട് ഈ പ്രദേശത്തെ ക്രൈസ്തവർ സാമ്പത്തീകമായി ഉയർന്ന നിലയിലായിരുന്നു. കാലക്രമത്തിൽ ഇവിടം ബ്രാഹ്മണരുടെയും നായന്മാരുടെയും കർത്താക്കന്മാരുടെയും പ്രാദേശങ്ങളായി മാറി. അവരുടെ വാഴ്ചക്കാലത്താണ് ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികൾ പല നാടുകളിൽ നിന്നും ഈ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലേക്ക് കുടിയേറിയത്. ഇത് എഡി 6 ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന് ശേഷമായിരുന്നു. ഓരം, ഒഴുക, ചെറുകുളം, കളമ്പാടൻ, കദളിക്കാടൻ, ചെറുകാടൻ മുതലായ കുടുംബക്കാർ ആദ്യം കുടിയേറി. പാലയൂർ-കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂർ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് കുറവിലങ്ങാട് പ്രദേശത്ത് എത്തിച്ചേർന്നവരുടെ സന്തതിപരമ്പരകളിൽ പെട്ടവരായിരുന്നു അവരെന്നാണ് ചരിത്രം. അവരോടൊപ്പം മൂന്ന് നായന്മാരും ഒരു വൈദികനും പോന്നിരുന്നുവെന്നാണ് പാരമ്പര്യം. കടമറ്റം പ്രദേശത്തു നിന്നും ചില കുടിയേറ്റങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇത്തരത്തിൽ അങ്കമാലിക്കടുത്തുള്ള ചെങ്ങമനാട്ട് നിന്ന് ഈ പ്രദേശത്തേക്ക് കുടിയേറിയ കുടുംബത്തിപ്പെട്ട വ്യക്തിയായിരുന്നു കോതമംഗലം രൂപതയുടെ പ്രഥമ മെത്രാൻ മാർ മാത്യു പോത്തനാമുഴി.
ഇടപ്പള്ളി ഇടവകയിൽപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന പെരിങ്ങഴ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ നിന്ന് രാജകോപം ഭയന്ന് പോന്നവരാണ് നെല്ലൂർ കുടുംബക്കാർ. ഇടപ്പള്ളി ഇളംകല്ലൂർ രാജാവിന്റെ ആനയുടെ വാല് ഒരു ഉത്സവ ഘോഷയാത്രക്കിടെ വെട്ടിമുറിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടാണ് രാജകോപം ഉണ്ടായത്. നെല്ലൂർ മാപ്പിളയും നെടുംപള്ളി നായരും വഴുതനപ്പിള്ളി ഇളയതും ഒരു വെളുത്തേടനും ഇടപ്പള്ളിയിൽ നിന്ന് വന്നു ചേർന്നുവെന്നാണ് പാരമ്പര്യം. ആ സംഭവം 17 ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലായിരിക്കും നടന്നത്.
==ഇടവക ചരിത്രം==
മുവാറ്റുപുഴ പട്ടണത്തിൽ നിന്നും അഞ്ചു കിലോമീറ്റർ മാത്രം ദൂരെ ഒരു മനോഹര ഗ്രാമം- പെരിങ്ങഴ. ഈ ഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെ തിലകക്കുറിയായി വിരാജിക്കുന്നു വി.യൗസേപ്പിന്റെ ദേവാലയം. ദൈവാനുഗ്രഹഹത്തിന്റെ സുവർണ ലിപികളിൽ പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവിനാൽ എഴുതപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ചരിതം സ്വന്തമായുള്ള ഇടവകയാണ് പെരിങ്ങഴ. ദൈവാരാധനയ്ക്കായ് ദീർഘമായ ദുര്ഘടപാതകൾ താണ്ടിയിരുന്ന പെരിങ്ങഴ പ്രദേശത്തെ ആദിമ ക്രൈസ്തവർ മനസ്സിൽ താലോലിച്ചിരുന്ന ഒരു മധുര സ്വപ്നമായിരുന്നു – സ്വന്തമായി ഒരു ഇടവക ദേവാലയം.
പെരിങ്ങഴ കരയിൽ ഒരു പള്ളി സ്ഥാപിക്കണമെന്ന് 1860കളിൽ ഇവിടുത്തുകാർ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുകയും ആരക്കുഴ ഇടവകയുടെ പൊതുയോഗത്തിൽ ആ വിഷയം അവതരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. പൊതുയോഗം അത് അംഗീകരിച്ചു. പെരിങ്ങഴ കരയിൽ പള്ളി സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നതിന് തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തത് ‘കക്കൂത്തനാൽ’ എന്ന കുന്നുംപുറമാണ്. അവിടെ പള്ളി സ്ഥാപിക്കാനായി സർക്കാരിന്റെ അനുവാദത്തിനായി അപേക്ഷിച്ചു. ആയില്യം തിരുനാൾ മഹാരാജാവിന്റെ ഭരണകാലമായിരുന്നു അത്. പ്രസ്തുത കുന്ന് കൈപ്പള്ളിക്കാവ് എന്ന പ്രാചിന ഹൈന്ദവ ആരാധനാലയത്തിനടുത്ത് ആകയാൽ അവിടെ പള്ളി സ്ഥാപിക്കാൻ സർക്കാർ അനുവദിച്ചില്ല. പിന്നീട് മടത്തുംചാലിൽ കുടുംബവക തുരുത്തിക്കാട്ടുപുരയിടം പള്ളി സ്ഥാപിക്കാൻ നൽകാമെന്ന് പ്രസ്തുത കുടുംബക്കാർ സമ്മതിച്ചു. അങ്ങനെ മടത്തുംചാലിൽ എളച്ചി വക പുരയിടത്തിൽ പള്ളി വയ്ക്കാൻ അനുവാദത്തിനായി സർക്കാരിന് അപേക്ഷ നൽകുകയും സർക്കാർ അത് അനുവദിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
കാരിരുമ്പിനെ കാഞ്ചനമാക്കാൻ കഴിയുന്ന ഇവിടുത്തെ പഴയ തലമുറയുടെ പോരാട്ട വീര്യത്തിന് മുന്നിൽ പിന്നീടുണ്ടായ പ്രതിബന്ധങ്ങൾ ഒന്നൊന്നായി അകന്നു മാറി. അങ്ങനെ കൊല്ലവർഷം 1039ൽ, ക്രിസ്തുവർഷം 1864 നവംബർ 1ആം തിയതി പ്രസ്തുത പുരയിടത്തിൽ വി. യൗസേപ്പിതാവിന്റെ നാമത്തിലുള്ള പള്ളിക്ക് തറക്കല്ലിട്ടു. തറക്കല്ലിട്ടത് കൊച്ചുമെത്രാൻ എന്ന അപരനാമത്തിലറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ബ. മാർ സെല്ലിനോസ് മൂപ്പനച്ചനും ബ. കാന്തിദൂസച്ചനും കൂടിയാണെന്ന് ചരിത്ര രേഖകളിൽ കാണുന്നു. അവർ രണ്ടു പേരും വരാപ്പുഴ രൂപതയിൽ പെട്ട സന്യസ്ത വൈദികരായിരുന്നു. അന്ന് വരാപ്പുഴ വികാരി അപ്പസ്തോലിക ബ. ബർണർദീനോസ് ആയിരുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ നവംബർ 01 പെരിങ്ങഴക്കാർക്ക് ‘കല്ലിട്ടപ്പെരുന്നാൾ’ കൂടിയായി. പള്ളിപണിയുടെ മേൽനോട്ടം വഹിച്ചത് അക്കാലത്തെ ആരക്കുഴ പള്ളി വികാരിയായിരുന്ന ബ. മുരിക്കുങ്കൽ യൗസേപ്പുകത്തനാരായിരുന്നു. ആരംഭകാലത്തെ കടുത്ത സാമ്പത്തീക പരാധീനതകൾ മൂലം ഈ ദേവാലയം കർമ്മലീത്ത സന്യാസസഭയ്ക്ക് വിട്ടുകൊടുക്കുവാൻ ഒരുഘട്ടത്തിൽ ശക്തമായി ആലോചിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. എന്നാൽ വി. യൗസേപ്പിതാവിനോടുള്ള ഒരു ഇടവക മുഴുവന്റെയും നിരന്തരമായ പ്രാർത്ഥനയാൽ ദൈവകരുണ അത്ഭുതാവഹമായി ഒഴുകിയപ്പോൾ ആ വിട്ടുകൊടുക്കൽ നടന്നില്ല. കാലാന്തരത്തിൽ പെരിങ്ങഴ പള്ളി ഒരു സ്വതന്ത്ര ഇടവകയായി എറണാകുളം മെത്രാസന മന്ദിരത്തിൽ നിന്ന് അനുവദിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ പെരിങ്ങഴ പള്ളി സ്വതന്ത്ര ഇടവകയായത് എന്നാണെന്ന് കൃത്യമായി നിശ്ചയിക്കാൻ വഴിയില്ല. സ്വതന്ത്ര ഇടവകയുടെ ആദ്യ വികാരി ബ. കുറുപ്പുമടത്തിൽ മത്തായി അച്ചനായിരുന്നു. ഈ പള്ളിയുടെ കീഴിൽ 1881ൽ 323 വീടുകൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതായി ആ വർഷമെഴുതിയ ആരക്കുഴയുടെ ആത്മസ്ഥിതി പുസ്തകത്തിൽ കാണാം. പെരിങ്ങഴ ഇടവക ആദ്യകാലത്ത് പെരുമ്പല്ലൂർ, ആനിക്കാട്, രണ്ടാർ എന്നീ പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്നതായിരുന്നു. വിശ്വാസികളെ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുവാൻ വേണ്ടത്ര വിസ്തൃതിയില്ലാത്തതായിരുന്നു പള്ളി. അതുകൊണ്ട് ബ. റാത്തപ്പള്ളിലച്ചന്റെ കാലത്ത് പള്ളി വലുതാക്കി പണിതു. നിരവധി സമീപ ഇടവകകളുടെ മാതൃ ഇടവക കൂടിയാണ് പെരിങ്ങഴ. കാലാന്തരത്തിൽ പെരുമ്പല്ലൂർ, ആനിക്കാട്, രണ്ടാർ എന്നീ ഇടവകകൾ പെരിങ്ങഴ ഇടവകയിൽ നിന്നും രൂപംകൊണ്ടു. കൂടാതെ മാറാടി, നടുക്കര എന്നീ ഇടവകകൾ ഭാഗീകമായും പെരിങ്ങഴ ഇടവകയിൽ നിന്നും രൂപീകരിച്ചതാണ്.
ബ. കോണിയെക്കല്ലുങ്കലച്ചന്റെ കാലത്താണ് ആദ്യത്തെ വൈദിക മന്ദിരത്തിന്റെ പണി പൂർത്തീകരിച്ചത്. പള്ളിയുടെ മുഖവാരം പണിയിച്ചത് ബ. കുര്യൻ പ്ലാത്തോട്ടത്തിലച്ചനാണ്. സർവ്വാനുഗ്രഹദായികയായ വി. ലൂർദ്ദ്മാതാവിന്റെ പെരിങ്ങഴ കവലയിലെ ഗ്രോട്ടോയും പള്ളിയുടെ മണിമാളികയും നിർമ്മിച്ചത് ബ. നെടുങ്ങാട്ടച്ചനായിരുന്നു. ഇപ്പോഴുള്ള പുതിയ ദൈവാലയത്തിന്റെയും വൈദിക മന്ദിരത്തിന്റെയും പണികൾ ബ. ജോൺ ഇലഞ്ഞേടത്ത് അച്ചന്റെ കാലത്താണ് നടത്തിയത്. 2006 മെയ് 01ന് മാർ ജോർജ് പുന്നക്കോട്ടിൽ പുതിയ ദൈവാലയത്തിന്റെ കൂദാശ കർമ്മം നിർവഹിച്ചു. സിമിത്തേരിപ്പള്ളി പുതുക്കിപ്പണിതത് ബഹു. മാത്യു കാക്കനാട്ട് അച്ചന്റെ കാലഘട്ടത്തിലായിരുന്നു. പള്ളിയുടെ സമീപം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന സിമിത്തേരി പുറകുവശത്തേക്ക് വിപുലപ്പെടുത്തിയത് ബഹു. ജോസഫ് കൊയ്താനത്തച്ചന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലാണ്. വിശ്വാസപരിശീലന പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ സുഗമമാക്കുന്നതിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി ബഹു. മാത്യു വലിയമറ്റം അച്ചൻ വികാരിയായിരുന്നപ്പോൾ കാതകെറ്റിക്കൽ സെന്ററിന്റെ നിർമ്മാണം ആരംഭിക്കുകയും ബഹു. സോട്ടർ പെരിങ്ങാരപ്പിള്ളിൽ അച്ചന്റെ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ പൂർത്തിയാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. പെരിങ്ങഴ ഇടവക സ്ഥാപിതമായതിന്റെ ശതോത്തര സുവര്‍ണ ജൂബിലി 2014ല്‍ വിപുലമായി ആഘോഷിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. ഇടവക സ്ഥാപനത്തിന്റെ 150 വർഷങ്ങൾ പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയതിന്റെ വിപുലമായ ആഘോഷങ്ങൾക്ക് നേതൃത്വം നൽകിയത് ആക്കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ വികാരിയായിരുന്ന ബഹു. ജോസ് അറക്കൽ അച്ചനായിരുന്നു.
2020ലെ ഇടവക തിരുനാളിനോട് അനുബന്ധിച്ച്, പൂർണമായും മരത്തിൽ തീർത്ത അതിപുരാതനമായ, വിശുദ്ധ യൗസേപ്പിതാവിന്റെ തിരുസ്വരൂപം പൊതു വണക്കത്തിനായി പള്ളിയങ്കണത്തിൽ പ്രത്യേകമായി സജ്ജമാക്കിയ രൂപക്കൂട്ടിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചു. അനേകായിരങ്ങൾക്ക് അനുഗ്രഹവും ആശ്വാസവുമായി, ഒരു നാടിനൊന്നാകെ സംരക്ഷണമായി വി. യൗസേപ്പിതാവ് പെരിങ്ങഴ പള്ളിയങ്കണത്തിൽ സൂര്യതേജസ്സോടെ നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു.
2021 മാർച്ച് 21ന് പെരിങ്ങഴ പള്ളിയിലർപ്പിച്ച ദിവ്യബലി മദ്ധ്യേ കോതമംഗലം രൂപതാധ്യക്ഷൻ മാർ ജോർജ് മഠത്തിക്കണ്ടത്തിൽ പെരിങ്ങഴ ഇടവകയെ രൂപതയുടെ ഔദ്യോഗിക തീർത്ഥാടനകേന്ദ്രമായി ഉയർത്തി. ബഹു. ജോർജ് പൊട്ടക്കൽ അച്ചനായിരുന്നു ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ വികാരി.
വി. യൗസേപ്പിതാവിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിലെ ഏഴ് വ്യാകുലങ്ങളെയും സന്തോഷങ്ങളെയും അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കി പള്ളിമുറ്റത്ത് സ്ഥാപിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള പിതാപാതയുടെ നിർമ്മാണം നടന്നത് ബഹു. ജോർജ് പൊട്ടക്കൽ അച്ചന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലായിരുന്നു. 2022 മാർച്ച് 18ന് മാർ. ജോർജ് മഠത്തിക്കണ്ടത്തിൽ പിതാവ് വി. യൗസേപ്പിതാവിന്റെ പിതാപാതയുടെ ആശീർവാദകർമ്മം നിർവഹിച്ചു.
ഇവിടുത്തെ ഇടവക തിരുനാൾ ഫെബ്രുവരി 1, 2 തീയതികളിൽ നിന്നും മാറ്റാറില്ല. അതും ഇവിടുത്തുകാരുടെ വിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണ്. ഫെബ്രുവരി 1, 2 തീയതികളിൽ നിന്നും തിരുനാൾ മാറ്റിയ വർഷം ഉണ്ടായ പ്രകൃതി ക്ഷോഭം ഇന്നും ഇവിടുത്തെ പൂർവ്വികർ വ്യക്തമായി ഓർക്കുന്നു. ദൈവവിളികൊണ്ടും സമ്പന്നമാണ് പെരിങ്ങഴ ഇടവക. കഴിഞ്ഞ കാലങ്ങളിൽ കോതമംഗലം രൂപതയിൽ ഏറ്റവുമധികം വൈദികർക്കും സന്യസ്തർക്കും ജന്മം നൽകിയ ഇടവകകളിലൊന്നാണ് പെരിങ്ങഴ.
1864ൽ സ്ഥാപിതമായ പെരിങ്ങഴ ഇടവക വി. യൗസേപ്പിന്റെ സംരക്ഷണത്താലും മധ്യസ്ഥതയാലും അനുനിമിഷം അനുഗ്രഹിക്കപെട്ടുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.150ൽ അധികം വർഷത്തെ ഇടവകയുടെ ചരിത്രത്തിൽ, വി. യൗസേപ്പിന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹത്താൽ നിരവധിയായ അത്ഭുതങ്ങൾക്ക് ഈ നാട് സാക്ഷ്യം വഹിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ദിവംഗതനായ വി. ജോണ് പോൾ രണ്ടാമൻ മാർപ്പാപ്പ പറഞ്ഞതുപോലെ, “ജോസഫ് ഒരു സ്നേഹനിധിയായ പിതാവാണ്”. അതെ, ആ സ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ കരുതലിലാണ് പെരിങ്ങഴ ഇടവക വളരുന്നത്.

എല്ലാ വർഷവും മാർച്ച് 19ന് വി. യൗസേപ്പിതാവിന്റെ മരണ തിരുനാൾ പെരിങ്ങഴ തീർത്ഥാടന ഇടവകയിൽ വിപുലമായി ആഘോഷിച്ചുവരുന്നു. അക്രൈസ്തവർ ഉൾപ്പെടെ അനേകം പേരാണ് മാധ്യസ്ഥം തേടി നേർച്ചകാഴ്ചകളുമായി വിശുദ്ധന്റെ സന്നിധിയിൽ തിരുനാൾ ദിവസം എത്തുന്നത്. ആഘോഷമായ തിരുനാൾ കുർബാനയിലും പ്രദിക്ഷണത്തിലും നേർച്ചസദ്യയിലും ആയിരങ്ങൾ പ്രാർത്ഥനാപൂർവ്വം പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നു. വി. യൗസേപ്പിതാവിന്റെ മരണതിരുനാൾ ദിനത്തിലെ നേർച്ചസദ്യ പണ്ടുകാലം മുതലേ ഒരുക്കുന്നത് ഇടവകാതിർത്തിക്കുള്ളിലെ ഹൈന്ദവ സഹോദരങ്ങളാണ് എന്ന പ്രത്യേകതയുമുണ്ട്. വി. യൗസേപ്പിതാവിനോടുള്ള ഒരു നാടിന്റെ ഒന്നാകെയുള്ള വിശ്വാസ തീക്ഷ്ണതയാണ് ഇവിടെ വെളിവാകുന്നത്.

ഇന്ത്യയിൽ തന്നെ ഇത്തരത്തിൽ ആദ്യമായി വി. യൗസേപ്പിതാവിന്റെ പിതാപാത അതിന്റെ പൂർണതയിൽ സ്ഥാപിതമായിരിക്കുന്നത് പെരിങ്ങഴയിലെ ഈ തീർത്ഥാടന ദൈവാലയത്തോട് ചേർന്നാണ്. എല്ലാ ബുധനാഴ്ചകളിലും പെരിങ്ങഴ പള്ളിയിൽ വി. യൗസേപ്പിതാവിന്റെ പിതാപാത പ്രാർത്ഥനയും നൊവേനയും മുടക്കം കൂടാതെ നടക്കുന്നു.

English Version
Right from the beginning of human civilization both science and religion lent a helping hand to man in all his pursuits. When we scan the history of the world we learn that all the prominent civilizations had been built around famous places of worship. They are the sources of energy and spirit to a place. Along with the educational institutions and other social service institutions, the places of worship enable us to connect our tradition with modernity and to preserve everything valuable in our traditions. In the same manner the strong belief of our selfless forefathers and the light they have shown us will continue to guide us away from the darkness that envelops us. When we recall the more than one hundred and forty five years of the history of Peringazha church, we notice a large number of the unforgettable incidents and landmarks in it which our forefathers preserved for posterity with passion and dedication..
Peringazha is a small village just five kilometers away from Moovattupuzha. The present generation retains the memories about the sweetness, the sacredness and the smell of the village which have been bequeathed by their forefathers who in the long-forgotten past used to reap a harvest of gold from the fertile soil. The church dedicated to St Joseph stands there as the most important monument of the village and its proud history. The church bells have been beckoning the poor, the depressed and the destitute, to its shelter and comfort for the past one and a half centuries. The church has a history inspired by the Holy Ghost and endowed with all kinds of blessings from God. A peep into that will obviously provide illumination and encouragement to the members of the parish.
THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE CHURCH
Our forefathers had the insight that Christians must shower the light of morality and truth forever. When they had to travel long distances through inaccessible forests they cherished the dream of having their own little church. In 1864, they convened a meeting to discuss the possibility of building a church here. In that meeting they selected Kakkoothanal hill as the site of the proposed church. Then they applied for the permission from the government. The application was rejected because the chosen site was very near Kaippallykkavu. It didn’t depress the people who immediately chose the present site, the Thuruthikkattupurayidam of Madhathumchalil Elachi and submitted an application again. The permission was soon granted. Hindrances cleared one by one before the determination of the early Catholics. Ultimately, on 1 November 1864, the foundation stone for the new church was laid jointly by Marsilanos Mooppanachan, better known as the Little Bishop, and Kanattachan, as per the order of bishop Mar Louis Pazhayaparampil. Thus the first of November, the All Saints Day, became the Kallittathirunal for the parish.
At first Peringazha was a chapel of Arakkuzha forane church. There was a time of acute financial shortage when it was proposed to hand over the church to the Carmelite Mission. However, God had other plans for the church. After a little time the parish started getting financial support from its parent church. It also got the necessary wine, wax, and incense from the Arakkuzha church. In return the income from donations, special collections and the money remitted at the time of funerals went to the accounts of Arakkuzha church in those days. In course of time Peringazha became an independent parish. When the order for that came from the bishop house at Ernakulam, Rev Fr Mathai Kuruppumadhathil was the vicar of Peringazha.
There was a very generous son of Peringazha, Sri Uthup Malampurathu. Since he was not blessed with children he donated all his properties to the church at the time of his death. The one thousand Rupees obtained through the sale of that property was utilized in building a two-storied priest home. The work was completed during the tenure of Rev Fr Koniyekkallumkal. The first church was too small to contain all the believers who flocked to the church for mass. So it was made bigger during the time of Rev Fr Rathappillil. The façade was built by Rev Fr Kurian Plathottathil. The various maintenance works were also done during his time.
The vicars of Peringazha had always been very conscious about the need for nourishing the spiritual wellbeing of the parishioners. They had also been interested in reforms, both in the buildings and in the practices. One great achievement had been the construction of the grotto of Lourdu Matha at Peringazha junction. It was under the supervision of Rev Fr Nedungattu. It was he who built the bell tower too. The grotto had at first been a small cross placed on 1 February 1975. It was elevated to the level of a grotto on 24 January 1976. Mar Mathew Pothanammoozhy, the bishop of Kothamangalam, blessed it and offered the first holy mass there.
S D CONVENT
It has been widely recognized that the sisters of the Catholic Church are dedicated missionaries who work tirelessly in the vineyards of the Lord. Their contributions are very significant particularly at a time when most of the people turn a blind eye to spirituality. A convent of the sisters of the destitute was inaugurated at Chunangumvely on 11 July 1945. It was aimed at providing shelter to the deserted and the destitute. Rev Fr Jacob Madhathumchalil donated 11 acres and 61 cents of land to the convent. The work on the convent was completed very soon and it was blessed by Rev Fr Jacob Madhathumchalil himself on 8 September 1947. The orphanage was built by the parish. In 1949, the first holy mass was said in the convent chapel. The orphanage was inaugurated by Very Rev Fr Nedumpurathu, the vicar of Arakkuzha forane church. The selfless and loving service of the sisters of the destitute has always been invaluable in the progress of the parish.
THE DEVOTIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
The various devotional organizations of the Catholic Church have been serving the church as well as the world through exemplary service programmes. Most of them have been functioning well at Peringazha right from the beginning. There is documentary evidence to prove that the parish council had been functioning exceptionally well even fifty three years ago. There are records to show that the practice of budgeting was in existence from then onwards. As early as in 1946, the Marian Sodality of Peringazha was adjudged the best in the Ernakulam Archdiocese. The former form of CYM, the ‘Katholica Pravarthaka Sangham’, was active here as early as 1936. There was a reawakening in the fields of catechism and devotional organizations during the period of Rev Fr Kavalakkattu.

Now there are a number of organizations which function admirably well. The mothers’ union strives to ensure the honour of motherhood and womanhood and to progress with a solid foundation on morality and piety. The society of St Vincent de Paul, Cherupushpa Mission League, Marian Sodality and Thirubalasakhyam provide significant contributions to the overall progress of the parish.
EDUCATION
The role of Christian missionaries in the educational sector in India has been acknowledged everywhere. The idea that there should be a school wherever there is a church came from Blessed Father Chavara. Following that there came schools beside every church. An LP School was established at Peringazha way back in 1916.
In those days Perumballoor, Anikkad and parts of Randar were parts of the Peringazha parish. In 1921 an LP school was established at Anikkad and that gave education to the people of Anikkad and Randar. Since the grants from the government were meager, the schools functioned with substantial financial help from the church. In 1979, Peringazha LP School was upgraded as a UP school. For that a large two-storey building had been constructed under the supervision of Rev Fr Mulanjanani. The formal inauguration of the UP school was done on 30 January 1980 by Mar George Punnakkottil, the bishop of Kothamangalam, in a meeting attended by Sri K M Mani, the Finance Minister, and Sri P J Joseph, the Education Minister.
SOCIAL SERVICE ACTIVITIES
The modern days are noted for the infiltration of narrow-minded sectarian perspectives on the basis of political ideologies, religions, and castes. In such a context our forefathers have demonstrated that the sources of social service and patriotism have not dried up. The historical records of the parish give enough to show that, over the years, the vicars as well as the parishioners had always worked jointly to benefit the society at large. They had always stood for favorable changes in the society and put in selfless service for that. In the early years roads were very few and the people knew the difficulties it caused. Most of the roads we find in Peringazha today had been made by the people jointly. Records kept in Peringazha church show that on 25 March 1936, the construction of the road from Peringazha church to Arakkuzha road started and that the road was opened for traffic on 3 December of that year. It is recorded in the church register that around two thousand people had assembled at the P O junction after a procession and after the inauguration of the road went in a procession to the church and gave a sumptuous meal to the poor. That road is the Mar Augustinos road of today. The records also show that a road was constructed to Anikkad. Thus we find that many roads that we see today were begun by the forefathers. It was mainly due to the initiative of Rev Fr Nadungattu that a bus route was sanctioned between Peringazha and Perumballoor.
Of all the teachings of Christ, one of the most prominent has been the doctrine of service. The church has always practiced it too. In that area Peringazha parish was also dedicated. The various organizations functioning in the parish have contributed significantly towards the amelioration of the problems that beset the public. For instance, there was a great drive to provide houses to all the needy under the initiative of Rev Fr Paul Vazhuthalakkattu. He was also instrumental in making several roads.
VOCATION
As a result of the careful attempt to guide the youth through the correct path without deviating to ignorance and immorality, a large number of the young boys and girls have chosen God’s vocation. There are six priests from the parish serving the Kothamangalam diocese and 11 mission fathers serving the people outside the state and in foreign countries. There are also 41 sisters from this parish.
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
When there is a Catholic community united in prayer and when that is supported by the Lord, good results will follow. It had been the long-cherished dream of the parishioners to rebuild the church. Then there came the apt persons to lead that attempt. It was Rev Fr John Ilanjedathu, a very pious man who showered the flowers of goodness wherever he went. He had the unique gift of hiding his dislikes behind a sweet smile. It was he who led the reconstruction work. The bishop of Kothamangalam laid the foundation stone for the new building on 19 March 2003. The vicar got the support of two efficient assistant vicars also. Though Rev Fr Jince Pulickal was here only for a short while his leadership was excellent. Then came Rev Fr Antony Ovely, the present vicar. It was mainly because of the wholehearted support of the parishioners that the new building was completed so quickly. We should also remember the contributions we received from a lot of generous people. The services rendered by the trustees James Paikattu, George Pannarakkunnel, Biju Thottupuram, and Manuel Kodamullil will also be remembered for a long time. In the history of the two thousand year long Catholic Church, one hundred and fifty years is a very short period indeed. Yet it has been very significant for the people of Peringazha
Right from the beginning of human civilization both science and religion lent a helping hand to man in all his pursuits. When we scan the history of the world we learn that all the prominent civilizations had been built around famous places of worship. They are the sources of energy and spirit to a place. Along with the educational institutions and other social service institutions, the places of worship enable us to connect our tradition with modernity and to preserve everything valuable in our traditions. In the same manner the strong belief of our selfless forefathers and the light they have shown us will continue to guide us away from the darkness that envelops us. When we recall the more than one hundred and forty five years of the history of Peringazha church, we notice a large number of the unforgettable incidents and landmarks in it which our forefathers preserved for posterity with passion and dedication.
Peringazha is a small village just five kilometers away from Moovattupuzha. The present generation retains the memories about the sweetness, the sacredness and the smell of the village which have been bequeathed by their forefathers who in the long-forgotten past used to reap a harvest of gold from the fertile soil. The church dedicated to St Joseph stands there as the most important monument of the village and its proud history. The church bells have been beckoning the poor, the depressed and the destitute, to its shelter and comfort for the past one and a half centuries. The church has a history inspired by the Holy Ghost and endowed with all kinds of blessings from God. A peep into that will obviously provide illumination and encouragement to the members of the parish.
THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE CHURCH
Our forefathers had the insight that Christians must shower the light of morality and truth forever. When they had to travel long distances through inaccessible forests they cherished the dream of having their own little church. In 1864, they convened a meeting to discuss the possibility of building a church here. In that meeting they selected Kakkoothanal hill as the site of the proposed church. Then they applied for the permission from the government. The application was rejected because the chosen site was very near Kaippallykkavu. It didn’t depress the people who immediately chose the present site, the Thuruthikkattupurayidam of Madhathumchalil Elachi and submitted an application again. The permission was soon granted. Hindrances cleared one by one before the determination of the early Catholics. Ultimately, on 1 November 1864, the foundation stone for the new church was laid jointly by Marsilanos Mooppanachan, better known as the Little Bishop, and Kanattachan, as per the order of bishop Mar Louis Pazhayaparampil. Thus the first of November, the All Saints Day, became the Kallittathirunal for the parish.
At first Peringazha was a chapel of Arakkuzha forane church. There was a time of acute financial shortage when it was proposed to hand over the church to the Carmelite Mission. However, God had other plans for the church. After a little time the parish started getting financial support from its parent church. It also got the necessary wine, wax, and incense from the Arakkuzha church. In return the income from donations, special collections and the money remitted at the time of funerals went to the accounts of Arakkuzha church in those days. In course of time Peringazha became an independent parish. When the order for that came from the bishop house at Ernakulam, Rev Fr Mathai Kuruppumadhathil was the vicar of Peringazha.
There was a very generous son of Peringazha, Sri Uthup Malampurathu. Since he was not blessed with children he donated all his properties to the church at the time of his death. The one thousand Rupees obtained through the sale of that property was utilized in building a two-storied priest home. The work was completed during the tenure of Rev Fr Koniyekkallumkal. The first church was too small to contain all the believers who flocked to the church for mass. So it was made bigger during the time of Rev Fr Rathappillil. The façade was built by Rev Fr Kurian Plathottathil. The various maintenance works were also done during his time.
The vicars of Peringazha had always been very conscious about the need for nourishing the spiritual wellbeing of the parishioners. They had also been interested in reforms, both in the buildings and in the practices. One great achievement had been the construction of the grotto of Lourdu Matha at Peringazha junction. It was under the supervision of Rev Fr Nedungattu. It was he who built the bell tower too. The grotto had at first been a small cross placed on 1 February 1975. It was elevated to the level of a grotto on 24 January 1976. Mar Mathew Pothanammoozhy, the bishop of Kothamangalam, blessed it and offered the first holy mass there.
SD CONVENT It has been widely recognized that the sisters of the Catholic Church are dedicated missionaries who work tirelessly in the vineyards of the Lord. Their contributions are very significant particularly at a time when most of the people turn a blind eye to spirituality. A convent of the sisters of the destitute was inaugurated at Chunangumvely on 11 July 1945. It was aimed at providing shelter to the deserted and the destitute. Rev Fr Jacob Madhathumchalil donated 11 acres and 61 cents of land to the convent. The work on the convent was completed very soon and it was blessed by Rev Fr Jacob Madhathumchalil himself on 8 September 1947. The orphanage was built by the parish. In 1949, the first holy mass was said in the convent chapel. The orphanage was inaugurated by Very Rev Fr Nedumpurathu, the vicar of Arakkuzha forane church. The selfless and loving service of the sisters of the destitute has always been invaluable in the progress of the parish.
THE DEVOTIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
The various devotional organizations of the Catholic Church have been serving the church as well as the world through exemplary service programmes. Most of them have been functioning well at Peringazha right from the beginning. There is documentary evidence to prove that the parish council had been functioning exceptionally well even fifty three years ago. There are records to show that the practice of budgeting was in existence from then onwards. As early as in 1946, the Marian Sodality of Peringazha was adjudged the best in the Ernakulam Archdiocese. The former form of CYM, the ‘Katholica Pravarthaka Sangham’, was active here as early as 1936. There was a reawakening in the fields of catechism and devotional organizations during the period of Rev Fr Kavalakkattu. Now there are a number of organizations which function admirably well. The mothers’ union strives to ensure the honour of motherhood and womanhood and to progress with a solid foundation on morality and piety. The society of St Vincent de Paul, Cherupushpa Mission League, Marian Sodality and Thirubalasakhyam provide significant contributions to the overall progress of the parish.
EDUCATION
The role of Christian missionaries in the educational sector in India has been acknowledged everywhere. The idea that there should be a school wherever there is a church came from Blessed Father Chavara. Following that there came schools beside every church. An LP School was established at Peringazha way back in 1916.
In those days Perumballoor, Anikkad and parts of Randar were parts of the Peringazha parish. In 1921 an LP school was established at Anikkad and that gave education to the people of Anikkad and Randar. Since the grants from the government were meager, the schools functioned with substantial financial help from the church. In 1979, Peringazha LP School was upgraded as a UP school. For that a large two-storey building had been constructed under the supervision of Rev Fr Mulanjanani. The formal inauguration of the UP school was done on 30 January 1980 by Mar George Punnakkottil, the bishop of Kothamangalam, in a meeting attended by Sri K M Mani, the Finance Minister, and Sri P J Joseph, the Education Minister.
SOCIAL SERVICE ACTIVITIES
The modern days are noted for the infiltration of narrow-minded sectarian perspectives on the basis of political ideologies, religions, and castes. In such a context our forefathers have demonstrated that the sources of social service and patriotism have not dried up. The historical records of the parish give enough to show that, over the years, the vicars as well as the parishioners had always worked jointly to benefit the society at large. They had always stood for favorable changes in the society and put in selfless service for that. In the early years roads were very few and the people knew the difficulties it caused. Most of the roads we find in Peringazha today had been made by the people jointly. Records kept in Peringazha church show that on 25 March 1936, the construction of the road from Peringazha church to Arakkuzha road started and that the road was opened for traffic on 3 December of that year. It is recorded in the church register that around two thousand people had assembled at the P O junction after a procession and after the inauguration of the road went in a procession to the church and gave a sumptuous meal to the poor. That road is the Mar Augustinos road of today. The records also show that a road was constructed to Anikkad. Thus we find that many roads that we see today were begun by the forefathers. It was mainly due to the initiative of Rev Fr Nadungattu that a bus route was sanctioned between Peringazha and Perumballoor.
Of all the teachings of Christ, one of the most prominent has been the doctrine of service. The church has always practiced it too. In that area Peringazha parish was also dedicated. The various organizations functioning in the parish have contributed significantly towards the amelioration of the problems that beset the public. For instance, there was a great drive to provide houses to all the needy under the initiative of Rev Fr Paul Vazhuthalakkattu. He was also instrumental in making several roads.
VOCATION
As a result of the careful attempt to guide the youth through the correct path without deviating to ignorance and immorality, a large number of the young boys and girls have chosen God’s vocation. There are six priests from the parish serving the Kothamangalam diocese and 11 mission fathers serving the people outside the state and in foreign countries. There are also 41 sisters from this parish.
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
When there is a Catholic community united in prayer and when that is supported by the Lord, good results will follow. It had been the long-cherished dream of the parishioners to rebuild the church. Then there came the apt persons to lead that attempt. It was Rev Fr John Ilanjedathu, a very pious man who showered the flowers of goodness wherever he went. He had the unique gift of hiding his dislikes behind a sweet smile. It was he who led the reconstruction work. The bishop of Kothamangalam laid the foundation stone for the new building on 19 March 2003. The vicar got the support of two efficient assistant vicars also. Though Rev Fr Jince Pulickal was here only for a short while his leadership was excellent. Then came Rev Fr Antony Ovely, the present vicar. It was mainly because of the wholehearted support of the parishioners that the new building was completed so quickly. We should also remember the contributions we received from a lot of generous people.
